Can the basement sump pump take waste from, for example, a sink in a utility room?
It is not recommended. Building regulations require two pumps, one for ground-water (uncontrollable) and one for waste (grey) water (controllable).
The basement pump is designed to only take ground/grey water so if there is foul waste going through the system, the pump will fail sooner rather than later. Also, it is not recommended to have a combined system taking ground water and grey water. The reason for this is that there is an increased risk of pump failure from the grey water which in turn means the groundwater (of which the ingress is uncontrollable) could cause the basement to flood.
